Installing Gentoo 10.1 under Virtual PC 2007

Gentoo is a Linux distribution especially interesting for anyone looking to fully optimize its installation in relation to his machine. Indeed, the entire system must be compiled "almost" manually. I say "almost" because it is quite simple when you follow a relatively standard installation process, even if it can be a little scared at first ... Once installed the system itself, the downloading, compiling and installation are very easy thanks to the software management tool used by Gentoo. This simplifies things and allows you to quickly understand the mode of distribution.

In this article we will see how to install Gentoo using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (Windows XP in my case, but there is a newer version of Windows 7). This way you can quickly deploy Linux virtual machines on your network, for example to serve as test machines for the development team.

Here are three videos from French Days of Microsoft with using Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2 enterprise with an emphasis on news, especially on the deployment of workstations, administration and mobility. You will need the Silverlight plugin to play videos.

The first video introduces the new features of VPN Reconnect (VPN auto reconnection after an interruption), Direct Access (a sort of VPN transparent to the user) and search functions of Windows 7 (locally or on the web directly from Explorer).

The second video shows the enhancements to BitLocker (USB encryption keys for example) and AppLocker (prevents installing unauthorized programs by version number, name or publisher from the digital signature included in the file ).

Finally, the third shows the news related to virtualization (virtual disk attachment, boot to a virtual disk, Windows XP compatibility mode) or the Branch Cache feature (allows a PC to an agency not to re-download a file from the central agency if another PC has done recently). A tool for capturing a user's actions leading to a bug is also shown.
