Excel 2007 introduced. Xlsx like new file format and default Excel 2003 can not open this type of document. It is possible to install a compatibility pack that adds support but it still happens frequently that people only use the 2003 version of "basic". To overcome this we can save files in. Xls manually in Excel 2007 and it is even possible to do automatically using Group Policy in a domain.

If when you click an Excel document does not open but the program starts correctly anyway, and that the document can be opened via File> Open in Excel, then this quick little tip will probably correct the problem.

In Excel, go to Tools> Options> General and uncheck Ignore other applications. That's all!
